Striking Machinists Union Engages In Indirect Talks With Boeing

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 751, which represents 33,000 striking Boeing machinists, has announced that it is currently involved in indirect negotiations with Boeing, with the assistance of Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor, Julie Su.

The union has underscored its dedication to achieving a fair settlement and emphasized its obligation to work towards an agreement, assuring that updates will be shared as progress is made.

"We are actively participating in indirect discussions with the company, facilitated by Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Julie Su. As part of our duty to secure a just resolution, we are fully committed to these discussions. It is our responsibility to endeavor towards a resolution. We will provide updates on any advancements once they transpire," the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 751 stated in a social media post.

Boeing recently announced intentions to reduce its workforce by approximately 10%, which amounts to around 17,000 employees, due to ongoing financial challenges and delays in production resulting from the machinists' strike. The company expects a significant financial setback in the third quarter, attributing this to the work stoppage by the IAM and related charges in its commercial and defense sectors.

Boeing has retracted its pay offer to about 33,000 IAM members, asserting that the union did not take its proposals seriously after two days of negotiations.

The machinists have been on strike since September 13, demanding a 40% wage increase over four years.
