Spirit Airlines is reportedly on the brink of filing for bankruptcy protection. This development comes after discussions for a merger with Frontier Airlines were unsuccessful, as revealed by sources cited in the Wall Street Journal. The Florida-based low-cost airline is currently in advanced negotiations with bondholders to establish a bankruptcy plan with the backing of a majority of creditors. This step is seen as essential due to the company's substantial financial losses and impending debt obligations. The airline's bankruptcy filing is anticipated to occur within the next few weeks.

In an effort to recover, Spirit had considered reviving merger discussions with Frontier Airlines to potentially merge the two carriers as part of a comprehensive restructuring during the bankruptcy process. Nevertheless, Frontier has decided against proceeding with the merger at this time.

Additionally, in March 2024, Spirit Airlines terminated its merger agreement with JetBlue Airways. This decision followed a January 2024 ruling by a U.S. court, which blocked the merger due to concerns over potential anti-competitive effects.
