CAC 40 Slides As Le Pen Threatens To Topple Government Over Budget

French equities saw a downturn on Tuesday following a statement from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, hinting at the imposition of significant new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China as part of measures aimed at addressing illegal immigration and drug trafficking issues.

Political tensions within France further affected investor sentiment. Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right party, expressed on Monday her intent to potentially destabilize France's minority government unless adjustments are made to the current budget bill. Le Pen indicated that members of her National Rally party are prepared to initiate a confidence motion should the ongoing parliamentary debate leave the bill unchanged.

The CAC 40 index experienced a decline, dropping 67 points or 0.9% to 7,190, after it saw slight gains on Monday. Shares in automaker Renault decreased by nearly 2%, and major banks BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole, and Societe Generale witnessed declines ranging from 1% to 2%.
