UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Fatally Shot In New York

Brian Thompson, the Chief Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare—a division under UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH)—was tragically shot and killed outside the Hilton Hotel located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, on Wednesday morning.

Thompson was making his way to the Hilton, dressed in formal attire, to participate in UnitedHealthcare's annual investor conference taking place in the hotel's ballroom.

According to reports from CNN, the perpetrator, masked to conceal their identity, awaited Thompson's arrival for approximately 10 minutes. From a distance of 20 feet, the gunman opened fire, discharging multiple rounds, ultimately resulting in Thompson's death.

In light of these events, UnitedHealthcare decided to cancel the remainder of their investor meeting, which had just commenced in Manhattan.

Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth, addressed attendees, stating, "We are facing a grave medical emergency involving one of our colleagues, and thus, regretfully, we must conclude today's event."

The New York Police Department's deputy commissioner's office confirmed the shooting, stating that a man had been shot in front of the Hilton at 1335 6th Avenue, within the Midtown North Precinct. The victim was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital, located less than a mile away, in critical condition and was subsequently pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for the New York Hilton Midtown expressed, "We are profoundly saddened by this morning's events in our vicinity, and our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragedy. For further inquiries, please refer to the New York Police Department."
