FTSE 100 Retreats After Slightly Positive Start; Miners Move Higher

Despite showing signs of improvement in the British manufacturing and services sectors for January, UK stocks have been trending downwards. This decline follows an initially positive start on Friday morning, influenced by sector-specific losses, particularly in banking and energy.

Efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to advocate for lower interest rates, along with suggestions of a possible trade agreement with China, have mitigated some potential market losses.

The FTSE 100 index, which had climbed briefly to 8,588.29 in early trading, saw a drop of 28.59 points or 0.33%, bringing it down to 8,536.61 just recently.

According to preliminary estimates by S&P Global, the UK's Composite PMI rose to a three-month high of 50.9 in January, up from December's 50.4. Market expectations had predicted a figure of 50.0.

The January manufacturing PMI was reported at 48.2, improving from December's 47.0 and exceeding the forecast of 46.9. Similarly, the Services PMI also reached a three-month high at 51.2, marginally improving from 51.1 in December, surpassing the anticipated 50.8.

Among individual performers, Antofagasta has increased by 4%. Glencore and Rio Tinto have recorded gains of 2.5% and 2%, respectively. Anglo American Plc has appreciated with a 1.85% rise, while Fresnillo is up by 1.3%.

WPP has posted a 2.7% gain, with Entain and JD Sports Fashion both rising by 2%. Other notable increases include Prudential, Mondi, Diageo, EasyJet, Spirax Group, and Intertek, each up between 1% and 1.8%.

British luxury brand Burberry climbed significantly, soaring 13% following a smaller-than-anticipated decrease in its fiscal third-quarter sales.

Conversely, Pearson, NatWest Group, Convatec Group, Lloyds Banking, Marks & Spencer, Aviva, Barclays, Taylor Wimpey, Imperial Brands, United Utilities, Centrica, BAE Systems, Tesco, Shell, SSE, and British American Tobacco are all experiencing declines, dropping between 1% and 2%.
