China Vows Countermeasures Against Trump’s New Tariffs

China has unveiled plans to implement decisive counteractions in response to the Trump administration's imposition of tariffs on Chinese products, as articulated by the Commerce Ministry on Thursday. This declaration came on the heels of President Trump's announcement of a supplementary 34% tariff on Chinese imports, which compounds the existing 20% duty that was enacted earlier in the year. The ministry urged the United States to retract its unilateral tariffs and to participate in equitable discussions with its trading partners. Though the specific countermeasures were not disclosed, the tariffs were denounced as contraventions of international trade regulations and were described as acts of “unilateral bullying” that infringe upon the rights of concerned parties. Furthermore, Beijing cautioned that the escalation in tariffs would not address the economic challenges facing the U.S. but would instead be detrimental to American interests, jeopardize global trade, and endanger the stability of supply chains. "In a trade war, there are no victors, and protectionism is not a sustainable strategy," the ministry underscored in a statement published on its website.
