Rwanda Inflation Rate Accelerates in March

In March 2025, Rwanda experienced an acceleration in its annual inflation rate to 4.9%, marking the first increase in three months, up from 3.8% in February. This rise can be attributed to higher prices in food and non-alcoholic beverages, which grew by 3.5%, compared to 1.5% the previous month. This surge was driven by a significant 35% increase in meat prices and an 8.3% rise in milk, cheese, and egg prices, although vegetable prices saw a 1.4% decline. Additionally, there was a notable increase in housing and utilities costs, which climbed to 2.7% from 1.7%, and a rise in the costs of alcoholic beverages and tobacco, which jumped to 6.2% from 3%. Conversely, the rate of price increase for transportation decelerated to 11.8% from 18.5%. On a month-to-month basis, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) saw a 1.9% rise, the largest in five months, following a 0.9% increase in February.
