Swedish Household Spending Drops in March

In March 2025, household spending in Sweden decreased by 0.4% compared to the previous month, reversing a downwardly revised increase of 1.0% in February. The decline was noted across various sectors, including transport, retail, and motor vehicle services, which saw a decline of 0.7% compared to a 0.6% drop previously. Housing, electricity, gas, and heating expenditures fell by 1.4% after a prior increase of 0.5%, while spending on post and communications dropped by 1.9%, following a 3.0% rise earlier. Moreover, food and beverage expenditures remained unchanged following a 0.3% increase in February. Spending in restaurants, cafes, hotels, and communication services slowed to 0.4% from 0.7%, as did expenditures on recreation, culture, goods, and services, which rose only 0.5% compared to 4.0% before. Conversely, there was an acceleration in spending on furniture, furnishings, household equipment, and consumables, which grew by 1.9%, up from 0.5%. On an annual basis, household spending increased by 1.8% in March, following a downward adjustment to a 2.0% gain the month before.
