US Inflation Expectations Remain Elevated

In April 2025, US consumer inflation expectations for the coming year remained steady at 3.6%, identical to March's figure, and consistent with the highest levels recorded in 2023. Projections for commodity prices over the next year saw increases in several areas: gasoline prices rose by 0.3 percentage points to 3.5%, medical care climbed by 0.8 percentage points to 8.7%, college costs surged by 2.4 percentage points to 9.1%, rent increased by 1.8 percentage points to 9%, and home prices edged up by 0.3 percentage points to 3.3%. Conversely, anticipated food prices for the upcoming year fell slightly by 0.1 percentage point to 5.1%. Looking further ahead, inflation expectations for the three-year period increased to 3.2%, reaching their highest level since July 2022, while the five-year outlook saw a minor decline of 0.2 percentage point to 2.7%.
