In April 2025, South Africa's gross foreign exchange reserves reached a new record, totaling $67.585 billion, surpassing the previous month's figure of $67.450 billion. This rise was primarily fuelled by an increase in gold reserves, which climbed to $13.192 billion from March's $12.588 billion, and a boost in Special Drawing Rights (SDR) holdings, which went up to $6.436 billion compared to $6.306 billion. Furthermore, the central bank's forward position, which reflects unsettled or swap transactions, saw a rise to $0.791 billion in April, up from $0.526 billion in March. However, foreign currency reserves experienced a decline, falling to $47.957 billion from $48.556 billion.
