Australia Trade Surplus Below Estimates

Australia's trade surplus in goods decreased to AUD 5.41 billion in April 2025, down from a slightly revised AUD 6.89 billion in March, and fell short of the market forecast of AUD 5.90 billion. This decline was driven by a drop in exports coupled with a rise in imports. Exports fell by 2.4% from the preceding month to reach AUD 44.08 billion, negating a downwardly revised 7.2% growth in March, primarily due to reduced shipments to the US influenced by tariffs imposed by Trump. In contrast, imports rose by 1.1% to AUD 38.66 billion, bouncing back from an upwardly revised 2.4% decrease observed in the prior month.
