New York Manufacturing Activity Weakens Sharply in June

In June 2025, the New York Empire State Manufacturing Index fell to -16, following a reading of -9.2 in May and missing market predictions of -5.5. This indicates a further decline in business conditions throughout New York State, marking the weakest level since reaching a two-year low of -20 in March. Key metrics demonstrated widespread weakness, with declines in new orders and shipments, worsening supply availability, and steady delivery times. Inventory levels remained mostly unchanged. In the labor sector, employment saw a slight increase for the first time in several months, while the average workweek held steady. Although input cost pressures have eased somewhat, they remain high; meanwhile, increases in selling prices have accelerated. Despite these challenges, firms have shown improved confidence about future prospects, with the general business conditions index turning positive for the first time since March.
