Mexico Retail Sales Fall in April

In April 2025, retail sales in Mexico experienced a 2% decline compared to the previous year, marking the steepest drop since June 2024. This downturn was largely attributed to underperformance in critical sectors such as groceries and beverages, which fell by 4.3%, hardware and glass, which saw a 6.3% decrease, and motor vehicles and fuel, which dropped by 5.5%. Additionally, department stores reported a 1.0% decline. However, not all sectors faced setbacks; online and catalog sales jumped by a notable 25.2%, household items increased by 6.0%, and textiles and footwear saw a 4.9% rise. Employment within the retail sector grew by 0.5%, while real wages experienced a 7% increase. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales across Mexico decreased by 1%.
