Thailand Personal Spending Rebounds in May

In May 2025, personal consumption in Thailand experienced a modest increase of 0.2% from the previous month, recovering from April's 1.5% decrease. This improvement was primarily attributed to ongoing growth in spending on durable goods, with passenger car sales significantly contributing to the uptick. Despite this, the overall rise was mitigated by a drop in services consumption, particularly within the hotel and restaurant sectors, as both Thai and international tourists reduced their spending. Non-durable goods consumption saw a decline, largely due to diminished fuel sales, while expenditures on semi-durable goods showed little change. Consumer confidence further weakened, impacted by uncertainties surrounding US trade policies, sluggish domestic demand recovery, and persistently high levels of household and business debt.
