Baltic Dry Index Halts 7-Day Losing Run, Still Logs Weekly Drop

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk sea freight index, an indicator of shipping rates for dry commodities, ended a seven-day decline on Friday with a modest rise of 0.1%, reaching 1,436 points. The supramax index experienced a notable increase of 2.8%, climbing to 1,081 points. Similarly, the panamax index, which is associated with vessels carrying between 60,000 to 70,000 tons of commodities such as coal or grain, saw a 0.9% rise, marking its highest point since September 2024 at 1,520 points. Conversely, the capesize index, which usually moves larger cargoes of around 150,000 tons like iron ore and coal, continued its decline for the 14th straight day, decreasing by over 2% to settle at 1,855 points. Overall, the benchmark index suffered a 5.6% decline over the week, its third consecutive weekly drop.
