India Inflation Rate Falls to 2019-Lows

India's consumer price inflation saw a consistent decline for the eighth consecutive month, reaching 2.1% in June 2025, the lowest since January 2019, surpassing the previous month's 2.82% and market forecasts of 2.5%. This significant decrease was primarily attributed to a 1.06% reduction in food prices, marking the first annual drop since early 2019. Notably, vegetable prices plummeted by 19%, and pulses saw an 11.76% decrease. Spices experienced a 3.03% decline, while meat and fish prices fell by 1.62%. In the fuel and light category, inflation eased to 2.55% from the previous month's 2.78%. Nonetheless, some sectors experienced persistent or slightly rising price pressures: housing inflation increased to 3.24% (up from 3.16%), education to 4.37% (from 4.12%), health to 4.43% (from 4.34%), and transport and communication to 3.9% (up from 3.85%). On a monthly scale, consumer prices recorded a 0.62% increase compared to May.
