Canada’s Wholesale Sales Revised Higher in May

In May 2025, Canada's wholesale sales experienced a slight increase of 0.1%, reaching 84.2 billion CAD. This marks a recovery from the 2.3% decline noted in April and surpasses the earlier forecast of a 0.4% decrease. Notably, growth was observed in five of the seven subsectors, which together account for 60.4% of the total sales. The primary drivers of this rise were the personal and household goods sector, which grew by 3.5% to 12.4 billion CAD, and the motor vehicles and parts sector, which increased by 2.2% to 14.7 billion CAD. However, the machinery, equipment, and supplies sector saw a contraction of 3.3%, down to 18.1 billion CAD. On a provincial level, three provinces recorded increased sales, with British Columbia leading the way with a 4.1% rise to 8.1 billion CAD. Compared to the previous year, wholesale sales saw an overall increase of 1.8%, with a slight volume uptick of 0.2%. Additionally, the inventory-to-sales ratio saw a marginal rise from 1.54 to 1.55.
