Moldova Trade Gap Widens in May

In May 2025, Moldova's trade deficit expanded to USD 599 million, up from USD 413.6 million in the same period the previous year. This widening of the deficit is attributed to a downturn in exports alongside a significant rise in imports. Specifically, exports saw a decline of 7.2% year-on-year, falling to USD 257.8 million. This was largely due to decreased sales to the CIS (-34.2%), EU countries (-2.3%), and other regions (-9.6%). Conversely, imports surged by 23.9%, reaching USD 856.8 million, spurred by increased purchases from EU countries (34.2%) and other countries (16.9%), despite a decline in arrivals from CIS countries (-22.5%). Over the first five months of the year, the trade deficit has grown to USD 2,929.8 million, compared to USD 2,131.2 million in the same timeframe the previous year.
