UK Payroll Employment Falls Further

In June 2025, the number of salaried employees in the United Kingdom decreased by 41,000, or 0.1%, bringing the total to 30.3 million. This followed a revised decline of 25,000 the previous month and represented the fifth consecutive monthly reduction, marking the steepest decrease since November 2020. Year-over-year, there was a 0.6% or 178,000 decline in payrolled employment, with the accommodation and food service activities sector experiencing the most significant drop of 108,000. Regionally, Westminster witnessed the largest decline in salaried employees at 3.3%, while the Shetland Islands experienced the highest growth at 1.8%. Concurrently, the median monthly salary increased by 5.6% compared to the previous year, reaching £2,522. The accommodation and food service activities sector led in annual median pay growth at 7.3%, whereas the professional, scientific, and technical sector exhibited the lowest increase at 3.4%.
