In July 2025, U.S.-based employers reported a total of 62,075 job cuts, marking a 29% increase from June's figure of 47,999 and a 140% rise compared to 25,885 cuts in July the previous year. This month's job reductions were significantly higher than the average for July since the onset of the pandemic. "We are observing the consequences of Federal budget reductions implemented by DOGE, particularly affecting non-profits and the healthcare sector alongside the government," commented Andrew Challenger, Senior Vice President and labor expert at Challenger, Gray & Christmas. More than 10,000 job reductions last month were attributed to AI, while issues surrounding tariffs have affected nearly 6,000 jobs this year. To date, employers have declared 806,383 job cuts for the year, marking the highest year-to-date total since 2020, when 1,847,696 cuts were announced. The "DOGE Impact" continues to be the predominant factor for job cut announcements in 2025, accounting for 289,679 planned layoffs so far.
