US Building Permits Lowest since June 2020

In July 2025, the issuance of building permits in the United States experienced a decline of 2.8%, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.354 million. This figure marks the lowest level seen since June 2020 and falls short of market forecasts, which had anticipated a total of 1.39 million permits. Specifically, there was a significant 9.9% decrease in permits for constructions with five or more units, bringing the annual rate down to 430,000. Conversely, permits for single-family homes saw a slight rise of 0.5%, amounting to 870,000. Analyzing the regional data, the South experienced a reduction of 4.6%, declining to 739,000 permits, and the West saw a sharper drop of 10.1%, totaling 267,000. However, the Northeast had a notable increase of 25.2%, reaching 129,000 permits, and the Midwest registered a modest growth of 0.5%, resulting in 219,000 permits.
