France Consumer Confidence Hits 2-Year Low

In August 2025, consumer confidence in France dipped to 87, a drop from 88 over the preceding three months and below the anticipated figure of 90. This represents the lowest confidence level since October 2023. Households have become increasingly pessimistic about their future financial prospects, with confidence falling to -16 from -14 in July. They continue to view the conditions for major purchases as unfavorable, with the index moving from -26 to -27. The perception of both France's past (-74 from -71) and future (-64 from -62) standard of living has also worsened, highlighting ongoing concerns. Furthermore, expectations for unemployment have inched up to 56 from 54, indicating growing apprehension in the labor market. On a more positive note, households' views on their past financial situation remained stable at -21. While current saving capacity is slightly lower at 17 from 18, and expected saving capacity decreased to 13 from 14, it remains relatively high. However, savings intentions have declined to 35 from 42. Conversely, inflation expectations have improved, with the relevant indicator rising to -25 from -30.
