Australia’s Services Sector Hits 3-Year High

The S&P Global Flash Australia Services PMI Business Activity Index climbed to 55.8 in August, up from 54.1 in July, indicating the most robust expansion observed in over three years. This growth was primarily driven by a significant surge in new business, including the highest increase in exports since June 2022. The heightened demand prompted companies to expand their workforce at the fastest rate since April, thereby assisting in reducing the backlog of work, although the decrease in backlogs was modest. Business confidence was bolstered, as firms forecast ongoing positive sales growth in the coming months. On the cost front, there was an uptick in both input prices and output charges due to escalating costs for supplies, fuel, and labor, although inflation rates did ease compared to July. Promotional activities and growing client interest contributed to the strong influx of new orders. Collectively, the data highlight a resilient services sector characterized by strong domestic and export demand.
