China Orders Firms to Halt Nvidia Chip Purchases

China's internet regulatory body has mandated that companies, including Alibaba, suspend orders for Nvidia's RTX Pro 6000D, a workstation chip adaptable for AI applications, as reported by Bloomberg. The Cyberspace Administration of China has instructed businesses to cease testing and cancel purchases of the chip, according to sources. Initially, several firms had considered acquiring tens of thousands of these units, as noted by the Financial Times. Nvidia designed the 6000D to circumvent US export restrictions on advanced AI chips intended for China. This directive highlights Beijing's effort to lessen dependency on Nvidia hardware while promoting domestic alternatives. It also forms part of China's protest against US-imposed restrictions that limit access to high-end foreign chips and manufacturing technology—issues that continue to complicate US-China trade negotiations.
