India experienced a slight increase in its unemployment rate, which rose to 5.2% in September 2025 from 5.1% in August. This was anticipated by market analysts following two months of declining unemployment rates. The rise was attributed to increased unemployment in rural areas, which moved from 4.3% to 4.6%, and a minor increase in urban regions, from 6.7% to 6.8%. Female unemployment experienced a more pronounced rise, reaching 9.3% in urban settings, up from 8.9%, and 5.5% in rural locales, up from 5.2%. Male unemployment also saw slight increases, with rural areas going from 4.5% to 4.7% and urban areas from 5.9% to 6.0%. Despite the uptick in unemployment figures, the employment rate reached 52.4%, marking its highest level since May, while the labor force participation rate surged to a five-month peak of 55.3%.
