China Adds 10.57 Million New Urban Jobs in Jan–Sept

China successfully generated 10.57 million new urban jobs in the first nine months of 2025, reaching 88% of its annual target, as revealed by official data on Wednesday. The country's surveyed urban unemployment rate dropped to 5.2% in September, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points from the previous month, according to Cui Pengcheng, spokesperson for the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, at a press conference covered by Xinhua. Cui highlighted the government's intensified initiatives to stabilize the job market and expedite the implementation of employment-supportive measures. For 2025, China aims for a surveyed urban unemployment rate of approximately 5.5% and the creation of over 12 million new urban positions. Recent statistics indicate that unemployment in September decreased from the six-month high of 5.3% seen in August. Additionally, China's urban youth unemployment rate for individuals aged 16 to 24, excluding students, dropped to 17.7% in September 2025, the lowest since June.
