Indonesia Retail Sales Growth Accelerates

In September 2025, retail sales in Indonesia experienced a 3.7% rise compared to the same month in the previous year, accelerating slightly from the 3.5% growth observed in August. This marks the fifth consecutive month of increased retail turnover, highlighting the continued impact of government initiatives to sustain consumer purchasing power. Sales gains were noted in several categories, including food, beverages, and tobacco, which climbed 5.4% from 4.8% in the previous month; automotive parts and accessories, which rose 12.4% compared to 11.3%; fuel, though growth moderated to 10.6% from 11.7%; and cultural and recreational goods, which edged up to 2.6% from 2.5%. However, sales of household appliances declined further, shrinking by 2.6% following a 1.8% drop in August, and sales of information and communication equipment remained weak, decreasing by 27.6% compared to the previous 28.9% fall. Notably, clothing sales saw a significant dip, falling by 7.1% and reversing the 8.3% gain recorded in August, marking the first decline in four months. On a month-to-month basis, retail activity decreased by 2.4%, contrasting with a 0.6% increase seen in August.
