In September 2025, US nonfarm payrolls experienced an increase of 119,000, rebounding from a revised decline of 4,000 in August and surpassing market forecasts of 50,000. This marks the most significant job growth in five months, with notable employment gains in the health care sector, which added 43,000 jobs, including 23,000 in ambulatory health care services and 16,000 in hospitals. Additional job increases occurred in food services and drinking establishments, which added 37,000 positions, and social assistance, which rose by 14,000 jobs. Conversely, the transportation and warehousing sector faced job losses, shedding 25,000 positions, with warehousing and storage losing 11,000 jobs and couriers and messengers decreasing by 7,000. Federal government employment continued its downward trend, declining by 3,000 in September, and has decreased by 97,000 since its peak in January. The manufacturing sector also saw a reduction of 6,000 jobs. Initially scheduled for release on October 3rd, the September jobs report was delayed due to the longest federal government shutdown in US history. Furthermore, the release of the October employment report has been cancelled.
