German Retail Sales Unexpectedly Fall

In October 2025, Germany experienced a 0.3% decline in retail sales compared to the previous month, contrary to market expectations of a 0.2% increase. This decline follows a slightly revised 0.3% rise in September and represents the fifth decrease in retail sales this year. The downturn can largely be attributed to a 0.7% drop in non-food sales and a 0.6% decrease in online and mail-order transactions. However, food sales saw an uptick, rising by 1.2%. When viewed on an annual basis, the retail sector posted a 0.9% growth, improving upon the upwardly revised 0.8% increase recorded in September.
