US 30-Year Mortgage Rates Drop Slightly

As of December 18, 2025, the average interest rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage has dipped slightly to 6.21%, down from 6.22% the previous week, as reported by a survey conducted by mortgage giant Freddie Mac. Comparatively, the rate for the same period last year stood at 6.72%. Sam Khater, Chief Economist at Freddie Mac, noted, “The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage has consistently stayed within a narrow 10-basis point range over the past two months. With rates reduced by half a percent compared to last year, the number of purchase applications is 10% higher than at this time last year.” Simultaneously, the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage has averaged 5.47%, a decline from 5.54% the week before.
