According to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association, mortgage application volume in the United States decreased by 5% in the week ending December 19th, marking its lowest level in over three months. This followed a 3.8% decline the previous week, resulting in the first consecutive weekly decrease since October. This trend coincided with a recovery in long-term Treasury bonds earlier in the month, amidst uncertainty about the Federal Reserve's plans for potential rate cuts next year, despite a drop in benchmark mortgage rates. Specifically, the volume of applications for refinancing a mortgage declined by 5.6% from the prior week, while applications for new home purchase mortgages decreased by 3.7%.
