CAC 40 Opens 2026 Higher on Defense Stock Gains

On the first trading day of 2026, the CAC 40 index experienced a 0.9% increase, closing at approximately 8,220, marking its highest level since November 13. The rally was predominantly driven by defense stocks, with notable contributions from Airbus, which rose by 2.8%, Safran, up by 2.9%, and Thales, which increased 2%. Other significant movers included Stellantis NV, increasing by 2.8%, STMicroelectronics, which gained 2.3%, and TotalEnergies SE, up by 1.4%. In contrast, Saint-Gobain and Accor slightly dampened the index's performance, each declining by 0.4%. Reflecting on the past year, the CAC 40 achieved an approximate gain of 10% in 2025. Societe Generale emerged as the standout performer, surging 153%, attributed to a resurgence in the banking sector and exceptional financial results. Conversely, Pernod Ricard was the poorest performer, with shares dropping nearly 33% due to declining sales in China and the US, exacerbated by tariff challenges in ongoing trade disputes.
