South Africa Forex Reserves Post New Historical High

In December 2025, South Africa's gross foreign exchange reserves reached an unprecedented level of $75.89 billion, rising from $72.07 billion in November. This increase was evident across all components of the reserves. Specifically, the foreign exchange reserves surged to $51.795 billion from the previous $48.728 billion. Concurrently, gold reserves saw an increase, climbing to $17.493 billion from $16.838 billion. The central bank's forward position, which accounts for unsettled and swap transactions, also witnessed a significant improvement, leaping to $1.161 billion compared to $0.552 billion in the prior month. Furthermore, Special Drawing Rights (SDR) holdings experienced a modest rise, reaching $6.604 billion, up from $6.502 billion in the previous period.
