As of January 22nd, the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage increased slightly to 6.09%, up from 6.06% the previous week, which was the lowest rate seen since September 2022, according to Freddie Mac data. Sam Khater, the chief economist at Freddie Mac, highlighted that with economic conditions improving and the average mortgage rate almost a full percentage point lower compared to last year, more prospective homebuyers are entering the market. He advised that buyers should always compare different rates, as obtaining multiple quotes could potentially save them thousands.
