Baltic Dry Index Falls for 6th Day

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk index, which tracks freight rates for vessels transporting dry commodities, fell for a sixth straight session on Monday, down 1.5% to 1,895 points — its lowest level since January 26 — amid weaker demand for larger ships. The capesize index, covering vessels that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, dropped 2.9% to a two-week low of 2,833 points. The panamax index, which reflects rates for ships that usually transport 60,000–70,000 tons of coal or grain, edged down 0.2% to 1,648 points. In contrast, the smaller supramax index rose 0.9% to 1,114 points.
