China’s vehicle sales fell 3.2% year-on-year in January 2026, following a 6.2% decline in December 2025, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). Sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) inched up 0.1%, extending their growth streak to an eleventh consecutive month. Last month, CAAM forecast that China’s total passenger vehicle sales would increase by 1% year-on-year in 2026, reaching 34.75 million units. NEV sales in 2026 are expected to hit 19 million units, a 15.2% year-on-year rise. In 2025, China’s overall vehicle sales grew 9.4% year-on-year to a record 34.4 million units, accelerating from 4.5% growth in the previous year, while NEV sales jumped 28.2%.
