Baltic Dry Index Halts 7-Day Losing Run

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk index, which tracks shipping rates for vessels carrying dry commodities, ended a seven-day losing streak on Wednesday, rising about 4% to 1,958 points—its highest level since February 3rd—on broad-based gains. The capesize index, reflecting rates for ships that typically transport 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, jumped 5.2% to 2,914 points. The panamax index, which covers vessels that usually carry 60,000–70,000 tons of coal or grain, climbed 3.9% to 1,735 points. Among smaller vessel segments, the supramax index added 1.5% to reach 1,140 points.
