TSX Renews Record High

The S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.6% to finish at a record high of 33,595 on Thursday, as a broad, commodity-driven rally in energy and gold miners offset mixed financials and weakness among asset managers. A rebound in crude prices, fueled by supply concerns in the Middle East, lifted energy producers across the sector: Cenovus Energy jumped 4%, Imperial Oil and Canadian Natural Resources each added 2%, and Suncor Energy advanced 1.7%. Gold miners also contributed to the upside, with bullion holding above $5,000; Agnico Eagle Mines rose 1.7%, while Barrick Gold edged up 0.6%. Financials were mixed rather than a drag, as Bank of Montreal climbed 0.8% and CIBC gained 1.6%, while Royal Bank of Canada finished unchanged. In technology, a 1.8% rise in Shopify helped offset a 2.6% decline in Brookfield.
