The Swedish economy shrank by 1.1% month-on-month in January 2026, a sharper decline than the upwardly revised 0.7% drop recorded in December and the steepest contraction since February 2025. “The Swedish economy began the year with lower output in manufacturing and construction, as well as in the general government sector,” said Neda Shahbazi, economist at Statistics Sweden. On an annual basis, the economy grew by 0.6% in January, easing from an upwardly revised 1.4% increase in December and marking the weakest year-on-year expansion since March 2025.
