Canada Building Permits Fall 8.4% in February

Canada’s building permits fell 8.4% month over month to C$12.1 billion in February 2026, reversing a downwardly revised 3.5% increase in January, as construction intentions weakened across all major sectors. Non-residential permits dropped 24.0%—the sharpest decline since April 2023—pulling the overall value down by C$1.3 billion. Institutional projects accounted for the bulk of this decrease, while commercial and industrial permits also fell but to a lesser extent. Residential permits provided a partial offset, rising to C$8.1 billion, as stronger multi-unit construction more than compensated for softness in single-family housing.
