Germany New Car Sales Edge Up 0.1% in May

In May 2026, new passenger car registrations in Germany edged up by 0.1% year-on-year to 239,448 units. Commercial registrations, which made up 64.4% of the total, declined by 4%, while private registrations increased by 8.4%.

Demand for electric vehicles remained robust. A total of 59,969 battery electric vehicles were registered, a 39.3% year-on-year increase, giving them a 25% share of all new registrations. Hybrid vehicles also continued to expand their presence, with 95,466 units registered. This corresponded to a 39.9% market share and a 3.6% rise compared with the same month a year earlier. Within this segment, plug-in hybrids accounted for 27,921 units, up 10.9%.

Conventional powertrains lost ground. Registrations of gasoline-powered cars fell 23.7% to 51,806 units, while diesel car registrations declined 13% to 30,547 units, reducing their share of the market to 12.8%. In contrast, registrations of LPG-powered vehicles surged 61.7% to 1,641 units, whereas no natural gas-powered passenger cars were registered during the month.
