Swedish Household Spending Rebounds in May

Household spending in Sweden rose by 0.7% month-on-month in May 2026, rebounding from a 0.8% decline in April. Consumption picked up in housing and utilities (1.4% vs -0.1% in April), transportation (1.3% vs -5.5%), and restaurants and hotels (1% vs -0.1%).

At the same time, spending fell at a slower pace in several categories: clothing and footwear (-0.2% vs -5.8%), recreation and culture (-2.6% vs -5.3%), and miscellaneous goods and services (-1.3% vs -3.8%). Consumption also increased further in information and communication (2.6% vs 2.5%).

By contrast, growth in spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages slowed (1.3% vs 1.8%), while expenditure declined for alcoholic beverages and tobacco (-0.4% vs 1.7%) and for healthcare (-4.5% vs 3.1%).

On an annual basis, household consumption grew by 3.4% in May, accelerating from a 1.8% increase in the previous month.
