Sensex Rises for 4th Day

India’s BSE Sensex closed about 0.5% higher at 77,156 on Wednesday, extending gains for a fourth straight session and posting its longest winning streak in two months. Sentiment was buoyed by easing crude oil prices and improved global risk appetite following the US–Iran framework agreement.

Nonetheless, a degree of caution prevailed as traders awaited the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision later in the day for signals on the future interest-rate path. Markets also kept an eye on the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit—their first encounter in over a year amid strained relations.

On the domestic front, Trent jumped 7.1% to top the gainers’ list, supported by optimism over its long-term growth prospects even as Citi reiterated its ‘Sell’ rating. Other notable gainers included BEL (up 3.1%), Eternal (2%), Tata Steel (1.5%), Infosys (1.3%), Titan (1.1%), Bharti Airtel (1.1%), and State Bank of India (1%). In contrast, Bajaj Finserv and Axis Bank underperformed, slipping 1.2% and 1.1%, respectively.
