US Consumer Spending Rises More than Expected

US personal spending increased by 0.7% month-on-month in May 2026, equivalent to a $156.1 billion rise. This marked an acceleration from April’s upward movement, which was revised down to a 0.4% gain, and it exceeded market expectations of a 0.6% increase. Spending on goods advanced by $61.8 billion, while expenditures on services grew by $94.3 billion. Adjusted for inflation, consumer spending rose 0.3% in May, following a flat reading in April.
