Mexico’s Economic Activity Cools Sharply in May, Year-on-Year Growth Slows to 1.1%

Mexico’s economic activity growth decelerated markedly in May 2026, with the year-on-year indicator easing to 1.10%, down from 2.60% recorded in April 2026. The figures, updated on 23 July 2026, highlight a significant loss of momentum in the pace of expansion compared with the same period a year earlier.

On a year-over-year basis, the “actual” May reading compares economic activity in May 2026 with May 2025, while the “previous” April reading measured the change between April 2026 and April 2025. The sharp slowdown suggests that, although the economy continues to expand, it is doing so at a much weaker rate than earlier in the spring.

The latest data will likely draw attention from analysts and policymakers monitoring the durability of Mexico’s recovery and the potential need to reassess expectations for growth in the second half of 2026.
