TSX Futures Gain as Corporate Earnings Roll In

Futures linked to the S&P/TSX Composite Index advanced on Thursday as investors weighed a new batch of corporate earnings. Vermilion Energy, Kinross Gold, Cenovus, Alamos Gold, Loblaw, and TransCanada all reported results that exceeded forecasts, while Ivanhoe Mines and Tourmaline Oil fell short of consensus estimates. Canadian Natural Resources and Fairfax Financial are scheduled to release their results later in the session. Rising gold prices lent additional support to mining shares. Meanwhile, minutes from the Bank of Canada’s July 15 policy meeting revealed a split among policymakers over the durability of the economic recovery. Separately, Prime Minister Mark Carney played down the likelihood of using restrictions on oil exports to the US as leverage in trade negotiations.
