Japan Industrial Output Growth Revised Higher

Japan’s industrial production rose 1.9% month-over-month in June 2026, beating the preliminary estimate of 1.3% and accelerating from a 0.1% gain in May. This marked the third consecutive monthly increase and the strongest growth since January, as manufacturing activity continued to recover amid easing supply chain disruptions and moderating energy cost pressures associated with prolonged tensions in the Middle East.

Output rebounded sharply in several key categories, including production machinery (7.7% vs. -3.5% in May), electrical machinery and information and communication electronics equipment (5.5% vs. -5.1%), and general-purpose and business-oriented machinery (4.7% vs. -6.0%). By contrast, production declined for electronic parts and devices (-6.1% vs. 1.2%) and for iron, steel, and non-ferrous metals (-0.4% vs. 0.3%).

On a year-on-year basis, industrial output increased 4.9%, reversing a 2.1% drop in May and registering the strongest annual gain since September 2022.
