FTSE 100 Rises on Monday

The FTSE 100 advanced 0.4% on Monday, outpacing broader European equity markets. Mining stocks led the gains, supported by firm metal prices and strength in SSAB after the collapse of a proposed US–Canada trade deal that would have reduced tariffs on Canadian steel. Endeavour climbed more than 2%, Antofagasta rose 1.8%, Anglo American added 1%, and Rio Tinto gained 0.5%.

By contrast, energy stocks dragged on the index as oil prices came under pressure at the start of the week. BP slipped nearly 3%, while Shell also edged lower despite reports that its US chemicals business has drawn interest from Exxon and Apollo, with the assets potentially valued at up to $8 billion.

Healthcare names also weakened, with AstraZeneca and GSK both down about 1%. Overall, sentiment remained cautious ahead of a planned US move to step up economic pressure on Iran, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expected to set out additional measures later on Monday.
