Brazil’s Private Sector Shows Tentative Improvement as August Composite PMI Edges Up to 49.1

Brazil’s private sector activity showed signs of stabilisation in August, with the S&P Global Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rising to 49.1 from 48.8 in July 2026, according to data updated on 3 September 2026.

Although the index remains below the 50.0 threshold that separates contraction from expansion, the move higher suggests that the pace of decline in overall business activity is easing. The latest reading marks a modest improvement from July’s performance, when the composite indicator had slipped to 48.8.

The August 2026 data indicate that, while Brazil’s economy is still facing headwinds, the private sector may be inching closer to a return to growth should the upward trend in the PMI continue in the coming months.
