Romania Retail Sales Fall at Softer Pace

Romania’s retail sales fell 6.1% year-on-year in July 2026, the twelfth consecutive monthly decline, but a moderation from June’s upwardly revised 7.4% drop. The contraction eased across all major categories: sales of food, beverages and tobacco decreased by 5.8% (compared with a 7.3% fall in June), non-food products were down 6.7% (vs 6.8%), and automotive fuel sales in specialized stores declined 4.4% (vs 5.8%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade increased by 0.8%, rebounding after an upwardly revised 1.3% contraction in June. Over the first seven months of the year, retail sales were 5.8% lower than in the same period a year earlier.
